CSR in India

India became the first country in the world to make Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mandatory through the Companies Act, 2013. This landmark legislation requires certain companies to spend at least 2% of their average net profits from the previous three years on CSR activities.

Legal Framework

Under Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, companies meeting specific criteria must:

• Have a net worth of ₹500 crore or more, OR
• Have a turnover of ₹1,000 crore or more, OR
• Have a net profit of ₹5 crore or more

Such companies are required to constitute a CSR Committee and spend at least 2% of their average net profit on CSR activities.
